Rumours of the new Snapdragon chipset (including benchmarks) has been out for some time now, and it was originally believed that Qualcomm will go with the Snapdragon 875 name. But many were surprised when the company launched the new flagship chipset earlier this week with the name Snapdragon 888. Why the change in naming scheme?

During the keynote, Qualcomm claimed that the number 888 is the "most premium name possible". According to BBC, certain parties believe that this naming scheme indicates Qualcomm's wish to help ease on-going US-China tensions, as the number 888 symbolises luck and prosperity for the Chinese (very ong!) In fact, most Chinese manufacturers have confirmed that they will launch Snapdragon 888-powered smartphones. This includes realme, Xiaomi, Honor, OPPO, and more.

The Snapdragon 888 is a powerful chipset featuring one Cortex X1, three Cortex A78, and four Cortex A55 CPU cores, as well as an Adreno 660 GPU. It also supports 5G, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2. On top of that, Qualcomm claimed that the new chipset will "transform smartphones into professional cameras", as it can snap up to 120 12MP photos in a second.
