Opensignal's new analysis say U Mobile users have the most improved 4G Download Speed experience after MCO

Previously, we reported Opensignal's analysis of Malaysia mobile data usage during the pandemic and they seem to suggest that there's a lack of WiFi network access. The company didn't stop there as they are back with another new report about our average mobile data consumption and download speed experience during the original MCO period.

As you can see in the first graph below, Opensignal has been monitoring our data consumption and 4G Download Speed Experience from the first MCO day until 28 September 2020. Since our local telcos had to limit the mobile data for everyone to surf normally, it's not surprising to see a huge spike and differences between the two lines. Fast forward to 1 July, the two lines slowly drifted back but with some distance in between.

Moving on to the next graph, this is an interesting one as it covers U Mobile, Maxis, Celcom, Digi and unifi. Since Opensignal nominated U Mobile as one of the most improved global networks in the Mobile Network Experience Global Awards (which most of you still don't believe lol), it's not surprising to see the 4G Download Speed Experience passing the users' data consumption. Celcom's network saw the highest increase in average data consumption — up to 44% — followed by a surge of up to 36% on Maxis, while that on its peers’ networks ranged below 35%. unifi's 4G Download Speed Experience has a rather rollercoaster ride throughout the months.

Opensignal further analyzed the distribution of our users' 4G download speeds for February, April and July to understand the variations in download speeds before, during and after the period in which the unlimited plans were offered. In their findings, they found that a higher proportion of users, on average, experienced lower download speeds in April, compared to February. The graph also showed that the majority are below 10Mbps.
