Small e-scooters are ill-suited for use on normal roads
Last week, PDRM declared that e-scooters would no longer be allowed on the roads. But what vehicles would be considered micromobility vehicles or e-scooters? What kind of regulations can users expect? The Personal Electric Vehicle Association (PEV Malaysia) decided to meet with the authorities to find out.
PEV Malaysia announced that it had a meeting with the JPJ's Enforcement Director, Head of Enforcement Division, and Head of Law & Act Division for clarification. The association posted a list of confirmed details on its Facebook page, which mostly touched on some of the broad strokes that were mentioned last week.
For now, there's no official statement calling for a ban of all use on micromobility vehicles. However, these vehicles will not be allowed to be used on any gazetted roads in Malaysia. Also, the JPJ will be meeting with various authorities and the lawmakers for further discussions. This is because the use of micromobility vehicles is considered to have preceded existing policies, so they can't simply decide on anything yet.
As it is, nothing has been resolved and e-scooters will still be limited to areas like local parks or around shopping centres. But at least we now know that the authorities are in discussions and won't make arbitrary decisions.
