As promised by YTL Communications (YES) back in February 2019, the Terragraph network has been successfully installed offering free public WiFi across 50 locations. With this, this marks Penang to be the most advanced broadband state in Malaysia and they are definitely ready for 5G connectivity in the future.

According to trial users, there are a 93% positive rating and 65% return unique users (from 19K users) for the network's strong performance and quality of service provided. The company also recorded down that an average consumption per user for the free public WiFi is around 320MB per session, 9GB as the highest one for a single user, delivering peak speeds of 170Mbps download and 160Mbps uploads. Not surprisingly, the highest WiFi hotspot consumption comes from Love Lane, Chulia Street, Kapitan Kaling Mosque, Campbell Street, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Chulia Street Night Market and Armenian Street Art.

On top of that, 120 local businesses, NGOs and government offices in George Town also got their hands on the free WiFi services such as the next generation FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) powered by Terragraph. FWA trial users reported that speed has been improved up to 130GB. That's about 16x more compared to their current service providers.

Apart from this, YES also announced another technology, Gigawire, into the Terragraph trial in George Town. It's a new technology that allows legacy copper wire cables in buildings to deliver fibre level broadband performance, without having to rewire the buildings which cost a lot.
