The caretaker Menteri Besar of Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has announced that the state is expected to reach 80 per cent 5G network coverage by the year 2024. Furthermore, 106 new 5G network sites will also be built in Perak by the end of the year, complementing the existing 37 network sites in the state.
Stressing the importance of widespread 5G coverage, Saarani said that currently, Ipoh is the first city in Perak to have such coverage with speeds exceeding 1 gigabyte per second and an average of 620 megabytes per second. According to Bernama, the 5G network will be expanded to other districts including Manjung, Kuala Kangsar and Taiping soon.
The caretaker Menteri Besar was speaking to reporters after the memorandum of understanding (MoU) ceremony between Ipoh City Council (MBI) and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (Yes) on the implementation of 5G around Ipoh city last Friday (28 October 2022). Yes is the first local telco to offer 5G network coverage in Perak and nationwide to its customers, though end users of other telco companies can expect to access 5G network soon.
Today, several Malaysian telco companies announced that they will be offering 5G network access to their users following the signing of the subscription access agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). As of the time of writing, these include U Mobile, Digi as well as Telekom Malaysia (TM).
