Proton Holdings Bhd has announced that it may accelerate the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) suitable for Malaysian consumers as early as 2025. Previously, the national car manufacturer set a target for 2027 but has since expedited its projection.

According to Bernama, the company’s deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah asserted that Proton is currently in the process of identifying suitable models of EVs that are more affordable and practical. He added that it is working together with Geely to speed up the project by identifying suitable models.

Furthermore, Roslan said that Proton is accelerating its EV project in response to the recommendation by the government, especially the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). Previously, MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz revealed that Proton, alongside Perodua, will produce national EVs and introduce affordable EVs to Malaysians.
