The International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) has revealed that it would be discussing with national car manufacturers Proton and Perodua on expediting the production of electric vehicles (EVs). Its minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that both companies would produce national EVs and introduce affordable EVs to Malaysians.

As reported by Bernama, Tengku Zafrul said that the move is expected to widen the range of EV choices in the market for the people. He further elaborated that the approved permit guidelines are being improved to give flexibility in the maximum number of completely built-up vehicle imports for market research pre-assembly of EVs.

As such would give local assemblers the opportunity to assess the needs of the new market in the EV segment prior to production. Previously, we reported that the government would install 10,000 EV charging points across the nation under the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint.

Furthermore, in July last year, then Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri suggested Perodua offer affordable EVs for Malaysians. Besides that, Proton was also touted to enter the EV market in 2027.
