The Snapdragon Summit later this month could be more packed than previous years. Previously, it was reported that Qualcomm would launch two flagship chipsets this year. But that's not all, as the company could also unveil an overclocked variant for one of the new chipsets.
Two Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 variants
Qualcomm typically uses the small 's' moniker to denote chipsets just one step down from its mainline flagship model. However, the company seems keen on diversifying its lineup for 2025. Qualcomm plans to launch a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is to be named Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The other chipset is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a successor to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4.
Considering that, you'd think Qualcomm is ditching the 's' moniker. But according to Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm will also launch a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Turbo. For reference, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 bears the model number SM8845, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Turbo is SM8735 Pro. While the specs were not revealed, the latter is likely an overclocked version of the former.
This isn't unheard of, as Samsung's Galaxy S series flagships also use overclocked versions of the Snapdragon flagship every year. For instance, this year's Galaxy S25 series sports the "Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy" with higher prime CPU, GPU, and NPU clock speeds. As such, this Turbo version may also overclock the CPU, GPU, and NPU.
A more affordable flagship chipset
All this diversification makes us wonder: Who is Qualcomm targeting for this? Prices for the top-end Snapdragon flagship chipset have continued to increase in recent years, so the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and 8 Gen 5 Turbo would serve as cheaper alternatives.
Will we see more brands going for these sub-flagship options? We'll probably find out later this year, but until then, stay tuned to TechNave for updates on Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon Summit.
