RCS encryption between Android & iPhone is now in development

After iOS 18 was released worldwide, one of the features that many overlooked was the launch of Rich Communication Services (RCS) support on the iPhone. With this, users from both platforms can make use of typing indicators, read receipts, high-quality media sharing, and improved group messaging.

Although it's a big step, this is just the beginning. Tom Van Pelt, Technical Director of GSMA said that the team is now working on adding end-to-end encryption. This will be the first step of "standardized, interoperable messaging encryption between different computing platforms, addressing significant technical challenges such as key federation and cryptographically-enforced group membership". This will also protect users from scams, fraud, and other security threats.

In addition, Google also made a dedicated page about RCS. After enabling encryption, there are still a few more things to do to make communication better and fun. This includes Apple adding a few functions like reacting to media, replying directly to messages in group chats, and more. We recently tried messaging between a POCO device and an iPhone with iOS 18 but it looks like RCS has yet to arrive.

To learn more about RCS, you can visit Google's page about RCS Chats on Android and iPhone right here. Soon, the silly war between the green and blue bubbles will be a thing of the past.
