As we enter into the extended period of the movement control order (MCO), some of us here in Malaysia are starting to experience slower internet speeds. It's not our imagination either, as a recent study suggests that the "internet pressure" in our country has increased for workdays.
According to economists from KASPR DataHaus, some countries are beginning to see the effects of increased pressure on their internet infrastructure in recent weeks. By comparing the data from 12-14 February 2020 to 18-20 March 2020, the company created a Global Internet Pressure map to show the current situation in many countries.

From the chart above, you can see that Malaysia is experiencing very high pressure on internet infrastructure, causing the data latency here to spike. This is attributed to the fact that our country entered a state of movement restriction much earlier than other nations, even though our country doesn't have as many confirmed COVID-19 cases.
During this time, Malaysians are turning to online services like e-learning, remote working software, and online video streaming. And all these services have one thing in common: Reliance on the internet to function. With the pressure on the local infrastructure, it's no wonder that some of us may experience slower loading times and download speeds.

Hopefully, this situation won't continue to escalate as we have another two weeks of MCO to go. Having said that, how has your mobile and broadband internet experience been lately? Have you noticed any decrease in download speeds or the latency increasing? Let us know on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news.
