Revised Sony PS5 model comes with minor changes, rolls out first in Australia

Remember that rumour about a lighter variant of the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5)? The source is pretty official so we know it's true, but no one knew when it would be launching. Well, it turns out that the launch happened sooner than we expected. In fact, sources claim to have spotted the new variant in Australia.

According to Press-Start (via VGC), a new variant of the Sony PS5 (Disc Edition) with the model number CFI-1102A was found in Australia. This new variant is much lighter at 3.6kg (vs 3.9kg), which means that Sony did something to reduce the weight. The changes are probably related to the material or components used for the console since there's a global shortage that's affecting many industries. Sony also provided a new textured screw, so you can attach the stand without using a screwdriver.

Sony could also have tweaked the wireless connectivity for the console, though there aren't any confirmations on that. Allegedly, the company registered a WiFi module in May 2021 and could have used it for the new variant. This new WiFi module reduces the peak antenna gain for the 2.4GHz band to 4.0/3.5dBi (from 6.0/6.0dBi), while boosting the gain for the 5GHz band to 6.0/4.5dBi (from 5.0/3.5dBi). In theory, this means that the new variant can receive the 5GHz band WiFi signal at a farther distance. Of course, it's hard to tell how useful this change would actually be.

We also don't know if Sony will bring in this new variant in Malaysia. But when you finally get your hands on a Sony PS5, you could check and see if the one you got is lighter or has a different model number from the launch model.
