If you had never heard of the name Coolpad before this, you’ll be forgiven as they weren’t so well known until recently. After LeEco acquired a controlling stake in Coolpad, they had been making waves with smartphones such as the Cool1 Dual, as well as Cool Changer S1.

The Coolpad Cool1 Dual is phablet made out of metal with a 5.5-inch IPS Full HD (1080p) display, and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 652 chipset and either 3GB or 4GB of RAM. The defining feature of the Cool1 Dual is its dual 13MP primary camera, which is much like the one on the Huawei P9 in theory, where one of its sensors, is monochrome while the other is color. It comes with 32GB or 64GB of non-expandable storage, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, while packing a large 4060 mAh battery. All these, with prices starting from 1099 Yuan (around RM713)!

The Coolpad Cool Changer S1, on the other hand, is a flagship device. Also made out of metal with a 5.5-inch IPS Full HD (1080p) display, it is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chipset with up to 6GB of RAM! The Cool Changer S1 features Harman Clari-fi audio system, a 16MP Sony IMX298 optically stabilised rear camera, up to 128GB of non-expandable, ultra-fast UFS 2.0 storage, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Keeping the lights on is a large 4070 mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support. It’s called the “Cool Changer”, as all these starts with a cool price of 2499 Yuan (around RM1620), a very long price to pay for such flagship specifications!
So, why all the sudden attention with Coolpad? Well, it turns out, they seemed to be setting up shop in Malaysia soon! Spotted on their Facebook page, is a recruitment notice for various positions. Does that mean that we’ll be seeing a Malaysian launch of the value for money Coolpad smartphones soon?
