There have been whispers in the Internet that Samsung is negotiating with Sony to acquire the IMX300 sensor, which the Xperia Z5 series currently have. Rumours indicate that it could be coming to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7.
However, according to Weibo (seriously, where are they getting these rumours lol) it seems that it is not the case anymore as Samsung have decided to go with a 12MP camera. Besides that, they also want to increase the sensor size to ½.0-inch instead of pushing higher pixel count and equipping the device with a dual-photodiode technology.
Meanwhile, there is another speculation that Samsung is also developing the 20MP camera sensor for the Samsung Galaxy S7. The patented application is called BRITECELL. What the patent does is improve the signal-to-noise ratio in low-light conditions and enlisting the image with RWB colour patterns for light enhancement. This is a totally new technology that we have yet to hear and learn.
It is interesting to see Samsung making such a move (if that is true), as normally they would focus on the pixel quality on the image. Speaking of which, Apple also increased their latest Apple iPhone 6s camera to 12MP. Does this seem like a continued rivalry between the two giants? Who knows, but at the end of the day they only want to give the best to their customers.
As usual, we will continue to keep an eye on these speculations but as always do take such rumours with a pinch of salt so stay tuned!
