Rumours: Samsung may redesign their fingerprint scanner

The Samsung fingerprint scanner cum home button has been in place since the Samsung Galaxy S5 was introduced, and the shape and design has been maintained ever since. However a new patent spotted online may change everything as the company may change the shape into a circle, ala Apple iPhones.

Two Samsung patents have been discovered on how the company may be looking to improve fingerprint scanning on its smartphones. The first patent details the use of an iPhone-styled round Home button under which the fingerprint scanner will be placed. The second is reminiscence of other Android makers today, but instead on putting it at the middle of the back, it can sit at the top of the phone – ala Motorola Atrix.

The two patents are just that – patents, and at this stage nothing is confirmed. However the fact that Samsung is seriously reconsidering their fingerprint scanner indicates that there is a shift in design mindset in Samsung. Will we see this in 2018’s Samsung Galaxy S8?
