After the recent Samsung Galaxy S24 series launch here in Malaysia, we managed to get some hands-on time with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Since it was such a short time, we weren’t able to do more thorough testing like benchmarks, gaming and putting the new AI driven features to the test (well, just a little bit), but if you’re still interested, do read on for our first impressions of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Design - Finally, a flat screen… and titanium?

Just like last year, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra differs from the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Samsung Galaxy S24+ with its sharper yet still rounded corners, but the biggest design change is the flat 6.8-inch LTPO Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 120Hz refresh rate and 1440 x 3088 pixel resolution. There’s still a punch hole camera at the top center for the 12MP front camera, but the display now has up to 2600 nits peak brightness, which is significantly higher than the previous 1750 nits peak brightness of its predecessor. It’s also got a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Armor for better scratch and crack resistance.

This should be good news for those of you who really like to use the S Pen stylus, which is still garaged in the chassis at the bottom. Speaking about the metal chassis, this year Samsung have also included titanium for a slightly lighter and thinner build. To be more precise the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra measures in at 162.3 x 79 x 8.6mm and 233g, 0.3mm thinner and 1g lighter than before. Somehow, Samsung has managed to pack in the same 5000 mAh battery despite this, which is certainly impressive.

However, the backside of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is nearly identical to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Despite there being a new 50MP periscope camera sensor this year, the overall layout and individual cameras with the metallic rims remains the same. The overall feel is still solid with excellent build quality while the phone itself still has the now standard IP68 water and dust resistance of its predecessor.

Still more Stand-out features

Apart from the aforementioned flat 6.8-inch 4K display with Corning Gorilla Glass Armor, new titanium chassis and 50MP periscope camera on the back, other stand-out features for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and AI-features. We’ve covered these in more detail in a separate article but we did manage to try out the real-time language translation, which should make things a lot easier for those who are going to travel overseas or communicate with people who don’t use your language this 2024.
