Samsung allegedly adding 120Hz refresh rate for the 1440p resolution on the Galaxy S20 series displays

Samsung may have already unpacked the new Galaxy S20 series smartphones and confirm availability in Malaysia, but that doesn't mean it can't add new stuff to the devices. A new rumour is claiming that Samsung is currently working on the software of the devices, hoping to enable 120Hz refresh rate on 1440p resolution.

According to Max Weinbach, Samsung could release the update within 1 to 3 months time. For those who are unaware, the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra all run on 1080p out of the box. Users can change the resolution to 1440p but the 120Hz refresh rate is currently unavailable for this resolution, a limitation that was put in place to reduce the battery consumption.

Bear in mind, Samsung hasn't made an official announcement on this yet. Before releasing the update, the company will have to ensure that the battery consumption when using this mode is at a manageable level. What constitutes as manageable is up for debate, but if Samsung feels that it's not worth it then we might not see this update happen at all.

Having said that, how important is having 120Hz refresh rate on 1440p resolution for you? Would you actively use it for videos and games, even with the potentially huge battery drain? Share your thoughts with us on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave.com for more news.
