As far as trends go, 3D was one that never quite took off. Some felt it would never work, while others said it was ahead of its time. Now, 3D has a chance of making a comeback with innovations from Samsung. Specifically, innovations from its Odyssey 3D monitor.
In March 2025, Samsung introduced new Odyssey series monitors, which included the Odyssey 3D (G90XF), Odyssey OLED G8, and Odyssey G9. What's interesting is the Odyssey 3D G90XF, which is a 3D monitor that's glasses-free. Yup, this monitor allows PC users to watch 3D content without 3D glasses or head-mounted displays (HMD). How? It's thanks to eye-tracking, view-mapping, and lenticular lenses.
In a video interview, Samsung's Donghwa Lim (Enterprise R&D Lab) explained how we 'see' 3D visuals when our left eye and right eye see different images and when there's a "binocular disparity". Previously, this was possible by wearing 3D glasses or HMDs. However, the Odyssey 3D doesn't need them. Instead, it uses two cameras to track the user's two eyes (separately), create a new image based on the eye-tracking data, and then passes the image to the user's eyes separately through the lenticular lens.
In the introduction video, Samsung's Taekwan Lee (Product Innovation Lab) also talked about which games can have 3D applied to them. First, gamers must download the Reality Hub Windows app, which lists games optimised for Odyssey 3D. Currently supported games include The First Berserker: Khazan and Overture. Lee also confirmed that Samsung is "in discussions with local and global game developers to expand the 3D gaming market".
