Samsung working on new 3D ToF sensor for the Galaxy S21 series

Last month, it was rumoured that Samsung would be looking to drop the ToF (Time of Flight) sensor for the Galaxy S21 series smartphones. Allegedly, the company felt that its ToF sensor isn't useful or powerful enough, compared to those from other manufacturers. However, it seems that the company already has a new type of ToF sensor for the Galaxy S21 series.

That's right, the Galaxy S21 series may be getting a ToF sensor after all. According to LetsGoDigital, Samsung recently filed a new trademark for what it calls its ISOCELL Vizion. The document states that this is a ToF sensor made for 3D scanning, 3D modelling, and 3D measurement. In other words, it's a 3D ToF sensor similar to the ones used in Sony and Apple smartphones.

Due to the new trademark, we now have reason to believe that Samsung could launch the Galaxy S21 series of smartphones with the ISOCELL Vizion. Samsung would want to make it more useful than its current ToF technology, so it may not necessarily launch it yet. In this case, we probably won't see it debuting in the Galaxy S21 series if Samsung is still in the prototyping phase.

Having the trademark registered so early suggests that it could be ready soon, but we'll just have to wait for more news on this. With that said, what kind of capabilities would you like from a 3D ToF sensor? Let us know on our Facebook page and stay tuned to TechNave for more updates on this.
