Remember the PlayStation Portal, which was first launched in 2023? Despite Sony claiming that it was a success, it doesn't have the same popularity as the PSP and PS Vita. After all, it's not a true handheld. Having said that, Sony does have plans to launch an improved successor.
PlayStation Portal OLED
According to a KeplerL2 on the NeoGAF forum (via TechPowerUP), Sony could launch a refreshed version of the PlayStation Portal in 2026. The new model will replace the LCD with an OLED display, but screen size is expected to remain unchanged. As a reminder, the PlayStation Portal is an accessory that allows gamers to remotely connect to a PS5 and stream games from the console.
That's right, the PlayStation Portal is not a standalone PlayStation handheld. As such, the PS Portal 2 (or perhaps PS Portal OLED?) is likely just a sidegrade with an OLED screen and other small upgrades. However, Sony does seem to have plans for a proper PlayStation handheld.
PlayStation 6 Portable
For those unaware, rumours suggest Sony is developing a standalone "PlayStation 6 Portable". The name is reminiscent of the PlayStation Portable launched back in 2004. KeplerL2 claims that this PS6 handheld will be powered by AMD's RDNA 5 GPU architecture.
Currently, handheld gaming devices featuring AMD chipsets, such as the ROG Ally X and MSI Claw, run on the older RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture. This means a Sony handheld powered by RDNA 5 could deliver significantly greater gaming performance, which would be very appealing to people who want to game on the go.
Of course, forum posts aren't particularly reliable sources of information. There's no way we can verify these claims, so take the news with a grain of salt.
