Advancement in manufacturing processes tend to result in great leaps in performance of products and TSMC is racing ahead in this department. Last week, reports claimed that the company would have 3nm ready by 2021. But the latest news claims that actual mass production of 3nm chips will be in 2022.

According to DigiTimes, the semiconductor company will be ready for risk production for the 3nm fabrication process in 2021, while volume production will be in the second half of 2022. For those who are unaware, risk production means that the process has established the baseline in terms of design and models, as well as pass reliability tests. It doesn't mean that TSMC will be ready to start mass production of consumer products based on the process.

Besides that, TSMC has also announced that it will be creating variants for the 5nm manufacturing process. Sources have claimed that one of them would be called 5nm Plus, though what exactly would be improved was not explained. It's said that TSMC would start to run mass productions with this process in Q4 2020.

The second part of the news is probably more relevant to us consumers soon. It indicates that we can expect to see even better mobile or computer chips in 2021, which would further improve the performance of future devices. We'll keep our eyes open for more concrete details directly from TSMC for now, but do stay tuned to TechNave.com for other news on the latest gadgets.
