Tech gifts for the holidays with Tech Kakis

While not all Malaysians are buying gifts next month, quite a few of us will be trying to think of what to get for our loved ones. In a discussion amongst ourselves and other techies at the Tech Kaki's discussion show in collaboration with KL Gadget Guy and Nasi Lemak Tech, we've listed down some tech gifts which we think would bring a little light to the lives of those who receive it. Check it out below:

ASUS PadFone S

Without a doubt, the ASUS PadFone S lives up to it's super smartphone billing. This includes one of the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processors, 4G LTE connectivity, a 5-inch full HD 1080p display and a 13MP rear camera with dedicated image signal processing chip. Features wise, this is one of the few smartphones below RM1K that can record 4K and slow-motion video and thanks to the ASUS PixelMaster technology it can also very good low-light shots as well. Retailing at just RM899 for the smartphone, it is one of the best bang-for-your-buck smartphones in the market. Already, the retail price has dropped down to RM840 at certain other third-party sellers so we expect stock to be rather limited. This means if you find it, get it quick, or someone else will. In addition, the PadFone S easily powers the PadFone S Station 9-inch display tablet dock, so much so that it can even handle heavy duty gaming as well.

Apple iPad mini 2
Granted, the Apple iPad mini 2 is a previous generation tablet, but for all intents and purposes it is more or less on par with the newer Apple iPad mini 3. This is because it is using the same A7 processor, the same thin bezel design and the same easy to use Apple iOS all for just RM969. You can see the full details about why we say that this is the Apple iPad mini tablet to get in our comparison article, but it should make an excellent gift for the children and tech-inclined adults in your life. The main advantage of nearly all Apple devices is that you get all the latest games and apps first, and they are guaranteed to work well. The iPad mini 2 is readily available at the Apple store and authorized Machines stores here in Malaysia but if you're willing to wait for the online store, you can get a special engraving done as well. However, like all Apple products, there is no expandable memory, so if you have a little extra, we do recommend you get the larger storage sized variants.

Huawei Ascend P7
The Huawei Ascend P7 may seem like an odd choice for us, but it is one of the closest Android smartphones we think that can match up to the Apple iPhone 6. At 6.5mm thin and 124g, the Ascend P7 is both thinner and lighter than the iPhone 6 and in it's own way, is a very beautiful smartphone. For a more detailed comparison do check out our Huawei Ascend P7 vs Apple iPhone 6 comparison tool. The Ascend P7 gives off a premium feel without feeling like a toy and should be a perfect gift for your older friends and relatives who regularly complain about their smartphones being too heavy to use. It isn't a slouch in performance either as the 8MP front camera guarantees good selfie shots with the grand kids and the full HD 5-inch display offers very clear visuals. The only downside is that the pricing is above RM1K with a retail price at RM1499 but this price has dropped significantly, so much so that you can get one for around RM1199 at the right shop.
