Previously, we reported that the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is weighing its options with Telegram, including blocking the platform. This is after the platform refused to meet with the commission as well as the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) regarding issues of spreading pornography, hate groups, scams and others.

Well, It seems that the disagreement may resolve soon as the former has finally agreed to meet with MCMC and KKD. As reported by Malaysiakini, the meeting was confirmed by KKD Minister Fahmi Fadzil after being queried by the press.

Back in March, Fahmi announced that his ministry would be grilling Telegram over scammers and other public security issues on the platform. Since then, KKD had also held discussions with other social media platform operators such as Meta and TikTok regarding the same issues.

However, Telegram had refused to cooperate with KKD and MCMC, stressing that it doesn’t want to participate in “any form of political censorship”. A Telegram spokesperson also iterated that the platform has been moderating harmful content for a long time, including the aforementioned issues above.

It is uncertain why the platform has now changed its mind about cooperation with KKD and MCMC. Well, let’s hope that the meeting tomorrow would be beneficial to end users in Malaysia.
