
Previously, we reported how individuals under the age of 16 are now banned from using social media in Australia. Now, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has revealed that her Ministry is currently reviewing the law, as well as a similar one in France, for implementation in Malaysia.
For context, the legislation in France involves requiring parental consent for children under 15 to use social media. Bernama quoted Teo as saying that the Communications Ministry is assessing how both countries intend to enforce the aforementioned laws.
She noted that the first issue that arises when parents provide their children with phones. Specifically, how do the Government ensure that children under the ages of 13 or 16 do not download social media apps onto their phones?
“So, who will be responsible for monitoring this? If someone violates the law by downloading social media apps, whom do we penalise—the parents, the children, or the platform providers?”, she added. Accordingly, Teo said that there are many practical issues that need thorough evaluation before any decision is made.
