Previously, we mentioned PMX’s announcement on Tesla’s news. Now, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul came forward to explain that the ministry or any of its agencies had never made an announcement that Tesla would open a factory in Malaysia. So, what should you know about it?
According to his now deleted X post, the validity of the report needs to be checked with Tesla since the source of the news is not from the company. Commenting further, Tengku Zafrul stated that his party did hold discussions with Elon Musk in an effort to attract investment, but Tesla never made a commitment to open a factory in this country.
In addition, Tengku Zafrul also said in an effort to strengthen the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, the government has introduced the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leader Initiative which is open to any EV vehicle manufacturer. The purpose of the initiative is to increase the network of chargers for the use of local EV vehicle owners and increase the participation of local companies in the EV charging ecosystem.
So far, only Tesla has applied and been approved for participation in the Global BEV initiative. From 2022 to the first quarter of 2024, he informed MITI has attracted investments worth RM24.55 billion in EV-related manufacturing activities from companies such as Chery, Gemilang Coachwork, Samsung SDI Energy, NexV Manufacturing and EVE Energy.
Local manufacturers also support Tesla's global supply chain by supplying them with parts, components and factory automation systems.
