During the unveiling of the iPhone 14 Pro series at its Far Out event, Apple lauded the series’ Super Retina XDR display as the “most advanced display ever in a smartphone”. A pretty bold claim, but it may be warranted by Apple given how the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s display recently won the DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award with an A+ Display Performance grade.

Part of DisplayMate’s annual Display Technology Shoot-Out, the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s display won 15 awards in total, two more than last year’s champion, the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here are all the awards that Apple’s latest flagship won for smartphone display performance:

  • Highest colour accuracy of white
  • Highest absolute colour accuracy
  • Smallest shift in colour accuracy with APL
  • Smallest maximum colour shift with APL
  • Highest image contrast accuracy and intensity scale accuracy
  • Smallest shift in image contrast and intensity scale with APL
  • Smallest change in peak luminance with APL
  • Highest full-screen brightness for OLED smartphones
  • Highest peak display brightness
  • Highest contrast ratio

According to DisplayMate, Apple has concentrated on improving the absolute picture quality and absolute colour accuracy of OLED. Moreover, Apple’s precision factory display calibration is “visually indistinguishable from perfect”.

Besides that, DisplayMate also found that the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max is able to hit a peak brightness of 2300 nits, which is actually more than the 2000 nits peak brightness advertised by Apple. No wonder a lot of users are noticing improvements when using the display in direct sunlight even compared to the already impressive iPhone 13 Pro series.
