The long-running TikTok US saga could potentially come to a close soon, as the related parties get ready to meet. Officials from China and the US have allegedly reached a "framework agreement" to transfer TikTok's US operations to a US-controlled business or entity.
Possible decision this week
According to Reuters, a decision could be made later this week. US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will discuss this over a call on Friday. The suspension of the ban expires tomorrow (17 September), so TikTok operations in the US could be affected before a deal is concluded. However, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said another 90-day extension could be imposed, so that the deal could be finalised.
Further discussions pending call
This isn't the first time US officials have said a deal would be completed soon. In March, Trump claimed that the TikTok sale would be completed before the previous 5 April 2025 deadline. At the time, it was the Susquehanna International Group and General Atlantic joint group that had the highest chance of winning a deal.
It was announced that the leaders of the two nations will decide whether to meet in person during the Friday call. As far as we can tell, the chances of an actual deal being struck on Friday aren't high. If the talks fall through, we could see another extension.
