The open payment system at Malaysian highways’ toll plazas is now gaining steam after making its debut on the MEX highway on 3 August. Starting yesterday, 2 more highways are allowing you to pay tolls via debit or credit cards, namely the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA).
According to Bernama, the open payment system at the 2 aforementioned highways is part of the IJM Toll Division’s pilot test for the new system. Its chief operating officer, Chua Lay Hoon asserted that the implementation of the pilot test was in line with the government’s initiative to provide alternative payment methods to highway users.

Hence, as of yesterday, BESRAYA and NPE accept several payment methods for their toll collection. These include debit cards, credit cards, prepaid cards, Touch ’n Go, SmartTag and RFID. However, do note that only certain lanes on the 2 highways accept debit and credit cards, which can be identified through special signs on the gantry.
Previously, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that 12 highways would implement the open payment system beginning this month. These include:
- Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)
- Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
- Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA)
- New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
- Penang Bridge (JPP)
- Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE)
- Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP)
- Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersal Scheme (SPRINT)
- Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS)
- SMART Tunnel
- Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX)
- Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE)
Moreover, the implementation of the open payment system is part of the efforts by the government to transition towards the multi-lane fast flow (MLFF) toll collection system by the end of 2024. MLFF basically removes boom gates at toll plazas and allows for smooth traffic.
