To supplement calls made with the usual cell towers, telco companies have been testing WiFi-Calling to extend their services to places where normal signals may not reach. U Mobile looks to be the first to have the feature to their customers, as they will be launching their WiFi-Calling service sometime this week.
In a nutshell, WiFi-Calling is a form of Voice over IP (VoIP) where voice is transmitted through data channels and WiFi hotspots, rather than the radio towers. This has the advantage of allowing calls to be made even when there are no signal bars on your phone.
We expect this service will be a value add-on, like their Video-Onz and Waze that was previously offered to their customers. The launch is expected to be on the 26th of May, so we will share more info once more is available.
