Huawei's trouble with the USA continues. Although it seemed like things were looking up, it has now been announced that the country's House of Representatives has passed a bill to ban the US FCC (Federal Communications Commission) from helping telco carriers purchase Huawei telecommunications equipment.
According to CNET, the chairman and ranking members from the US Energy and Commerce Committee also made a statement in regards to the bill. The reason for the bill was cited as a need to protect the country's wireless networks from malicious foreign interference. This bill will now have to make its way to the US Senate, the body that will then decide whether the ban goes through.
Should the ban go through, the US government will also be required to help small-time carriers remove all network equipment deemed suspicious. We're uncertain if the US government will also help replace the equipment. If not, then the move could really hurt the small-time carriers in more rural parts of the USA the most, causing them to reinvest in more expensive equipment from other brands. Huawei itself has not responded to this, though it's likely a formal announcement will be made soon.
