After rumours about pinecones, Xiaomi officially announced their first Surge S1 SoC (System on Chip) processor. Turns out Pinecone is the research subsidiary that designed and developed the 28nm Surge S1 which is now being used to power the Xiaomi Mi 5C. The Surge S1 is an octa-core ARM Cortex A53 processor (4 x 2.2GHz A53 + 4 x 1.4GHz A53) with a Mali T-860 MP4 graphics processor. According to Xiaomi it has outperformed the Snapdragon 625 and can decode 4K video, support VoLTE via a 32-bit DSP while an integrated 14-bit dual ISP allows it to take pictures in low-light.
