Previously, we reported on Google’s plans to introduce standalone Google Maps navigation support on Wear OS. True to its words, the tech giant recently announced that turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation on Wear OS without a smartphone is now available to users.
In an official Wear OS by Google Help post, Community Manager Khader M. asserted that the feature is only available for LTE smartwatches running Wear OS 3 and above. Hence, you can leave your phone behind and get to more places with Wear OS and Google Maps.
Khader further elaborated that this feature is especially helpful when users are out for a run or ride and have left their phones behind but want to take a detour or need help finding their way home. On a support page, it is further revealed that you can start navigation directly on your Wear OS smartwatches or take over when your phone is left behind.
For the latter, you do need to enable mirroring. Do note that this mirroring feature only works when paired with an Android smartphone.
