You can now see popular dishes at restaurants on Google Maps

Usually when we need directions to a restaurant, we refer to Google Maps. When we need food recommendations, we hit Google search to find some reviews and menus. Now, you only need Google Maps to be able to do both as the app has finally been updated to include popular dish recommendations when you search for a restaurant.

The feature is already out on Android and will be hitting iOS in the upcoming months. It utilizes crowd-sourcing to spotlight recommended dishes so you know what to order as soon as you arrive. Google refers to it as the new “dish-covery” feature. It is handled by a machine learning algorithm that matches dish names with photos and reviews by Google Maps users.

Pulling up a restaurant page in Google Maps will show a brand new “Popular Dishes” tab under Overview. From there, just tap on it and it will show you the new “Menu” tab where it shows photos, reviews and ratings from other users who have been to the restaurant. If you're in non-english speaking countries, the reviews will be translated for you.

This is part of Google’s efforts to become a one-stop app for things to see and do in the area to go further than just showing directions. Speaking of which, Google Maps now also has discovery and recommendation tools for users to find new places and nearby events. During the Google I/O, Google Lens was also announced which allowed users to simply point their device to a menu to highlight the popular dishes in the restaurant using the same Google Maps data.
