Previously, we mentioned Qualcomm's launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Today, a leaker suggests that the new-gen SoC could cost more than $160 (~RM738.08). That’s because the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could be priced at $160. Hence, we should expect the new SoC to cost more.

Interestingly, this price hike means that Apple could be paying more than it did for the A16 Bionic chipset. It also puts Samsung in an interesting position since Qualcomm is the company’s main partner. According to Digital Chat Station, the new-gen SoC will be more expensive than its predecessors. The leaker also suggests that these companies could adopt one of these two choices for future releases.

First, companies could save by sticking to the Snapdragon Gen 2. After all, it will be costly to switch to TSMC’s 4nm N4P process for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Secondly, companies could switch to MediaTek for the new SoC. This way, the cost issue can be solved through the Dimensity 9300, which is produced on the same TSMC N4P architecture.

However, it is understandable why companies are reluctant to make the switch. Qualcomm’s market and Snapdragon’s brand value are important in convincing users of its quality. However, the Dimensity 9300 supports faster LPDDR5T RAM. Currently, there are no other smartphone SoC that achieved this. Interestingly, its unique four Cortex-X4 cores might beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in multi-threaded benchmarks. Efficiency-wise, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is better than the Dimensity 9300.
