Earlier this week, vivo announced that the vivo X100 series would use a customised Sony stacked image sensor. Well, this year's iPhone 15 series could do the same. More specifically, the iPhone 15 standard models.

According to Ming-chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 standard models will adopt "stacked-designed CIS". Following that, Apple will source the same stacked image sensor for next year's iPhone 16 series. This sensor probably refers to Sony's latest stacked CMOS image sensor, which utilises a 2-layer transistor pixel technology. For your info, the tech was first unveiled back in 2021.

Details of the Sony stacked CMOS sensor

This type of sensor can absorb more light, reduce pixel noise, and deliver superior image quality even with smaller pixel sizes. Overall, we can expect better low-light performance and a higher dynamic range. It also suggests that the iPhone 15 standard phones will have better cameras without using larger sensors like some flagships have been doing this year.

Would this make the iPhone 15 a worthwhile upgrade for many Apple fans? Let us know what you think in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more updates about this.
