Today, our local telcos - Celcom, Digi and Maxis - have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This initiative is for the three companies to explore leveraging each other’s resources to deploy a wider, more efficient fibre network for Malaysia. This will enable improved 4G connectivity nationwide, in line with the government’s NFCP target.

Huawei recently announced that they might be introducing a new Kirin 820 5G chipset, which will be unveiled during the online conference that’s happening at 9PM on 24 February 2020. Based on a statement by gizchina.com, it seems that the new chipset comes with 5G support and it is manufactured using TSMN’s 6nm process.

A report yesterday recently revealed that 50 telecommunications towers will be built in Sabah starting from this year. Quoting Roslan Mohamad, Head of the Sabah State Office for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the report says that each of the communications towers are estimated to cost RM1.7 to RM1.8 million with total costs coming to RM290 million. They are expected to help support 5G telecommunications and improve 4G coverage.

Roughly a year since Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon X55 modem, the company has now revealed that its new Snapdragon X60 modem will be launching in early 2021. This is the first 5G modem chip that is built on the 5nm manufacturing process, with incredible download and uploads speeds.

5G is hitting Malaysia hard and we have proof for why we said that. Earlier, demonstration projects of 5G have happened in Langkawi, where they were able to use the technology to diagnose patients remotely and increase security at the Langkawi Port. Other than that, there were also different 5G smartphones being brought into Malaysia by different brands. Therefore, we think that OPPO Malaysia is trying to seize the opportunity to promote 5G as well by getting their first 5G device to be certified by SIRIM.

The telco companies in Malaysia have been hard at work testing 5G technology, which is expected to take 2020 by storm. In fact, the latest news is of Celcom's and Maxis' success in a trial of the 5G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN), a first for Southeast Asia. During the trial, results showed peak speeds of more than 1.1Gbps.

With 5G technology heading our way this year, Maxis has just announced that they have made a new record of achieving 2.96Gbps for single-user peak speeds. This was recorded at two of their trial sites in Subang Jaya recently, where they have been testing 200MHz of the 3.5GHz C-band spectrum.

U Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen has mentioned 5G could be a huge benefit in various industries ranging from healthcare, education, and more.
