    Is the network infrastructure in Malaysia ready to accomodate 5G?

    Yesterday, I was lucky enough to attend a keynote panel discussion hosted by edotco where notable figures such as CEO of Time Broadband Afzal Abdul RahimCEO of Robi Axiata Limited Mahtab Uddin AhmedHead of BCG Vaishali Rastogi, as well as Chairman of MCMC Encik Al-ishal Ishak were present. They then discuss the state of Malaysia's network infrastructure and whether it is enough to support the upcoming 5G network which will start to roll out sometime next year.

    Celcom moves ahead, Maxis maintains top speed and U Mobile improves in latest Opensignal Malaysia mobile network report

    Opensignal are back with their Mobile Network Experience Report for Malaysia September 2019 with the clear winner being Celcom with awards in the Latency Experience, 4G Availability and best Video Experience. Maxis maintained and solidified their position as "King of Speed" by getting awards in both Upload and Download speed while U Mobile improved leaps and bounds with 75% faster download speeds. Surprise contender Unifi stepped up offering Best Voice App experience (for when you make calls using apps like WhatsApp and so forth) but also improved in terms of video experience as well.

    Majority of Qualcomm's chipsets will come with 5G capabilities starting next year

    Qualcomm announced during IFA 2019, that majority of their Snapdragon chipsets such as the 600700 as well as the 800 series is expected to ship with 5G-capabilities starting next year. With that said, there is a high possibility that smartphones releasing next year that are priced under the RM1000 could come with the new 5G modem embedded in the chipset.

    8nm Samsung Exynos 980 chipset announced with built-in 5G and 108MP camera support

    Samsung have officially announced their Samsung Exynos 980 chipset today utilizing an 8nm fabrication process and utilizing a built-in 5G modem, an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for AI-powered tasks and an ISP (Image Signal Processor) that can support up to 108MP single and 20MP + 20MP dual camera sensors. Powered by an Octa-core CPU consisting of 2x ARM Cortex A77 cores and 6x Cortex A55 cores, there is still no news yet which Samsung device will utilize it, but it has an Arm Mali G76 MP5 GPU for faster graphics and gaming.

    MCMC reveals the truth about RM21.6b NFCP

    Malaysia's National Fiberisation and Connectivity  plan (NFCP) recently got announced in August 2019 and this was quickly followed by allegations of it being an RM21.6 billion mega project to be chaired by OPCOM. MCMC has stepped forward to clarify though, with the first clarification being that the NFCP is not a mega project but a plan consisting of strategies, various infrastructure projects and more to be implemented over a period of 5 years. The earlier announced RM21.6 billion is also just an estimation and this can be reduced as more cost effective ways of deployment are carried out.

    Based on a statement by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the three iPhones that are due to be released in the year 2020 is expected to come with 5G support. While Apple is still keen on utilizing Qualcomm’s 5G modems for its upcoming smartphones, there is a high possibility that Apple will end up developing its own 5G modems by 2021.

    Maxis and Gamuda signed new MoU to prepare Gamuda Cove as the first 5G township in Malaysia

    Since last November, Maxis and Gamuda signed an agreement in the provision and deployment of network infrastructure and services for twentyfive.7. This time around, both parties did another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Maxis is to provide and deploy 5G network infrastructure and services in Gamuda Cove, which will eventually be the first 5G township when it's ready in the country.
