Last weekend, ASUS Malaysia held a fitting send-off for their wildly popular ASUS ZenFone 2 range of smartphones with the Zoom to the Max media retreat showcasing the capabilities of their latest models, namely the ASUS ZenFone Zoom and ASUS ZenFone Max. Both offer fairly unique features with the Zoom utilizing a twin periscope inner lens design to be the world's thinnest optical zoom equipped cameraphone while the Max offers a whopping 5000 mAh battery with energy-efficient hardware that lets it charge other devices. Malaysia's media gave both ZenFones a run for their money at the event.
While the RM2099 priced ZenFone Zoom and RM799 (RM100 off of the initial RM899 pricing) priced ZenFone Max were the highlight of the event, the rest of the gang like the ZenFone Go, ZenFone Selfie, ZenFone 2 Laser and ZenFone 2 Deluxe ROG edition were also on hand. All are currently available in Malaysia.

ASUS have made a video comparing the battery life of the ASUS ZenFone Max with its 4000 mAh battery and energy sipping Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with the Apple iPhone 6s Plus. Both may have 5.5-inch displays, but you can see the differences between the two with our ASUS ZenFone Max vs Apple iPhone 6s Plus comparison tool. Quite obviously, the ZenFone Max beats the iPhone 6s Plus, but check out the video below to see just how much it manages to do so.

As of 15 January 2016, the ASUS ZenFone Max (ZC550KL) was released in Malaysia along withASUS ZenFone Zoom together. Currently it costs RM899, and it's already available at authorized retail stores. What's so eye catching about the smartphone is its humongous 5000 mAh battery sitting inside the hood. It's also equipped with a laser autofocus and dual-tone LED flash on its 13MP PixelMaster rear camera.
Now before I get started, I would like to remark that this won't be a full review because this device is actually not the final product so it's subject to change in the future. So instead of a full review, this will be just a first impression of what I think after using it for a week. Read below to find out more.

While it didn't arrive in late 2015 as we expected, we did manage to get our hands on the sample version of the ASUS ZenFone Max. Featuring a massive 5000 mAh battery combined with the energy sipping Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, the main highlight of the ZenFone Max is clearly its exceptional battery life. In any case, we managed to get some close-up hands-on time with it as you can see in our First Impressions hands-on video in this article.

The ASUS ZenFone Max was also announced with the the ZenFone 2 Laser but had several major differences. This includes a first generation ZenFone design with the buttons on the side and a metal frame. However, its biggest tech spec or feature is probably its massive 5000 mAh battery (the same as a large tablet) while packing in a 13MP rear camera with laser autofocus and dual tone LED flash. It also looks like it will have an artificial leather back as indicated in a recently released promo video (which you can see below).
The power sipping Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor no doubt helps increase battery life exponentially so if you're looking for a premium yet affordable ASUS ZenFone, then this could be the one to wait for. No specific Malaysia release dates or pricing details yet but it could be a sign that the ZenFone Max is coming to Malaysia soon. This is in line with earlier reports that we would be seeing the ASUS ZenFone Max and ZenFone Zoom in December 2015. Some tips from friends in the industry say it could be coming as soon as next week, so stay tuned for more details.

At the recent ASUS ZenFestival in India, ASUS announced a ZenFone with a massive 5000 mAh battery called the ASUS ZenFone Max. Unlike some of the other new announcements, the ZenFone Max goes for a design more like the original ZenFone range with no volume controls on the backplate. It does offer a metallic frame though along with physical capacitive keys below the 5.5-inch display. It also comes with the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 4 along with a Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM, 13MP PixelMaster camera with laser autofocus and dual-tone LED flash along with a 5MP front camera. It should have Dual SIM 4G LTE connectivity as well. No Malaysia release dates or pricing details for the ZenFone Max yet but it is expected sometime in October 2015. Asides from the battery and cameras, other features are decidedly entry-level to midrange so we expect a price tag of below RM1K, perhaps around RM799 to RM899 but we should know more in the next few months.
