Since all the local telcos are on board (except Maxis) with Digital Nasional Berhad's 5G Single Wholesale Network (SWN), Opensignal could finally do better research on Malaysians' 5G experience. Although it's still relatively early, Opensignal reported that we have "demonstrated an impressive improvement over existing 4G networks".

Yup, you read the headline correctly. We aren't kidding with this latest 5G analysis report by Opensignal. It was only published yesterday and we are just as surprised as you to find out that Kuala Lumpur is in second place in terms of 5G download speed (Mbps). The charts are based on Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC)'s biggest cities.

Yes, we are as surprised as you are. In this latest global 5G experience report by Opensignal, Malaysia is actually one of the top rankings in three 5G speed categories, as well as 5G Games Experience. As many of you should know, 5G is still rolling out and not available in many states at all.

Opensignal have recently announced the results for their Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 and Netherlands is the best place for video, South Korea is the best for gaming and has fastest average download speeds (~143 Mbps) while Denmark wins it for uploading (~20.9 Mbps). Malaysia’s telcos on the other hand managed to score with improvements in 4G Availability - Global Rising Stars but after Malaysia shut down 3G mobile connectivity last year, this isn’t entirely unexpected.

As our economic sector is slowly reopening, Opensignal is back once again with another report on Malaysians' mobile data experience. The last report was done in April 2021 just before the lockdown, so in this latest news - the data gathered was between 1 June until 29 August 2021 based on Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile and Unifi.

If you recall, our Prime Minister Muhyiddin announced that 5G connectivity will be ready by the end of 2021. While the tech community are taking it with a dose of salt, it is quite evident that 3G is phasing out as both Celcom and unifi will shut it down gradually. That said, there are still plenty of 3G-only users especially in the rural areas of Malaysia.
