  • Polaroid Selfie smartphone copies OPPO N1

Polaroid Selfie smartphone copies OPPO N1

Shown off recently at CES 2015, the Polaroid Selfie smartphone features a dual LED flash 13MP rotateable camera very similar to the earlier released OPPO N1. In fact, it is so similar as to be an almost blatant copy. This includes the same white body, rounded corners and rounded back. Tech specs and features are decidedly different with an octa-core MediaTek processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution and Android 5.0 Lollipop, but OPPO are definitely not amused. Here's what OPPO had to say about it:

It was recently reported that the Polaroid Selfie smartphone released at the CES 2015 has a remarkably similar design to the patented rotating camera phone OPPO N1. However, OPPO has not licensed the design of the rotating camera to any third parties, nor has us done that in any OEM way. We will continue to keep track of the event and reserves the right to take further legal action.

OPPO is committed to delivering our customers with the most delightful electronic experience that is full of surprises through meticulous designs and smart technology. OPPO holds strong respect to intellectual properties and any innovation of technology and design. Sustainable innovation sits at the core of our business, and has made OPPO being a mostly talked new brand in the mobile industry.

OPPO does not stop here with the rotating camera on N1. An upgraded model, the N3, was launched in late 2014 featuring a motorised rotating ‘selfie’ camera, which could rotate for 206 degrees and makes new shooting modes like auto panaroma possible. Perfect for hands free selfies!

Some folks may think it is okay for OPPO to be copied so blatantly as many other Chinese companies have so blatantly copied designs from elsewhere, but that doesn't make this right in any way. We expect there to be a court case or at least a cease and desist order soon. For more details and pics on the OPPO N1, check out our OPPO N1 review.

  • OPPO N3 officially announced, motorized automatic rotateable 16MP camera included

OPPO N3 officially announced, motorized automatic rotateable 16MP camera included

After months of teasing images and videos, mostly from OPPO themselves, the OPPO N3 has officially been announced. Featuring an automatic (as in self-tracking) motorized rotateable 16MP camera that rotates with the subject at hand the OPPO N3 is the latest flagship smartphone from OPPO. In terms of design, it looks like a mish mash of the OPPO Find 7 and the OPPO N1 with an in between sized 5.5-inch display. The main highlight of the OPPO N3 remains the camera though as the 16MP sensor is 1/2.3" large with a 1.34 micrometer pixel size, so you can get great low-light shots. IT also uses Schneider Kreuznach lens and utilizes the same photostitching feature for 64MP panorama shots. The camera also features slow shutter, ultra macro mode, after focus, RAW support and a new O-Click remote control.

  • OPPO N3 officially teased, reveals rotateable camera

OPPO N3 officially teased, reveals rotateable camera

After quite a few concept renders, OPPO has officially revealed the top half of it's upcoming OPPO N3 smartphone in a teaser image from it's Facebook page. The teaser image reveals that the rotateable camera will return from the OPPO N1 along with what appears to be an artificial leather backside and dual LED flash. While there are still no details on actual tech specs or features, it will have a version that uses a lighter lithium alloy frame. We assume that the camera will be another 13MP camera sensor, but it could also be one of the more recent 16MP camera sensors. No Malaysia release dates or pricing yet but the OPPO N3 is set for an official reveal on 29 October 2014. Stay tuned and we'll keep you updated as soon as we find out.

  • OPPO N3 will have aluminum lithium alloy version, concept picture appears

OPPO N3 will have aluminum lithium alloy version, concept picture appears

OPPO have confirmed that their upcoming OPPO N3 smartphone will come in two versions. One with an aluminum lithium alloy frame and the other with a stainless steel frame. While the steel version will no doubt offer a bit more in terms of strength and durability the aluminum lithium alloy could offer a lighter OPPO N3 smartphone. Lithium is known to be one of the lightest metals in the world but is also known for being active and flammable which is why it is often used in batteries. No news on Malaysia pricing or release dates yet but we expect the aluminum lithium alloy version to be a bit more expensive if a bit lighter than the stainless steel version. While we expect the OPPO N3 to come sometime next month in October, some renders of the smartphone have appeared showing the same swivel camera hinge as the previous OPPO N1 smartphone. Rumours indicate that the new OPPO N3 could have a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 5.9-inch full HD display, but do take such rumours and the rendered picture with a pinch of salt.

  • OPPO N3 coming in October 2014?

OPPO N3 coming in October 2014?

OPPO, makers of the rotating cameraphone the OPPO N1, may reveal their OPPO N3 smartphone in October 2014. This comes direct from OPPO's Facebook page but other sites have supposedly got their hands on early press renders of the OPPO N3. Like the Oppo N1 before it, the renders show a rotateable camera on top with dual LED flash and some fairly large speakers on the sides of the hinge. The design looks rather different from your average smartphone, with super slim bezels and the cylinder-like camera hinge on the top but it certainly looks very thin. No details yet on tech specs or features, but we expect it to be at least a 16MP camera to top the previous 13MP camera on the OPPO N1. No exact Malaysia release dates but we expect it to be either in October 2014 as OPPO is teasing or the next month. While the news on the release date is directly from OPPO, the press renders are not, so do take it with a pinch of salt. If you're unfamiliar with the rotateable camera on the original OPPO N1, do check out our OPPO N1 review later on.

OPPO N1 Mini officialy available in Malaysia for RM1398

The OPPO N1 Mini has finally landed in Malaysia featuring a smaller 5-inch display with the same 13MP camera on a rotateable hinge. OPPO Malaysia are offering the smaller version of the OPPO N1 at RM1398. Other tech specs and features for the OPPO N1 Mini include a 1.6gHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 5-inch display with 720p pixel resolution, 4G LTE connectivitiy and a smaller 2140 mAh battery. Other features include the PureImage 2.0 imaging engine from the OPPO Find 7, providing options such as 32-second Slow Shutter, Beautification 4.0, Hand Held Night Shoot, HD Picture and SUper Zoom. The HD Picture is particularly interesting as it lets you take six images that can be combined into a 24MP image with sharper overall details. The OPPO N1 Mini is also available in Cool Mint and White but is just available in Peninsula Malaysia for now.

  • Sony Xperia C3 officially announced with front facing 5MP camera and LED flash and selfie features

Sony Xperia C3 officially announced with front facing 5MP camera and LED flash and selfie features

Sony is joining the selfie bandwagon with the official announcement of the Sony Xperia C3 smartphone. While it has tech specs that slot it into the midrange market, the most notable features include a 5MP front camera complete with LED flash. Like some other selfie cameraphones, the Xperia C3 front camera is wide angle and features a Superior Auto mode for automatic enhancement, portrait retouch, Timeshift-burst and sweep panorama. Other selfie features include a double tap rear control which triggers the camera and a smile shutter feature which takes the shot when you smile. Other tech specs include the following:

    • 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor
    • 1GB RAM
    • 8GB storage + microSD
    • 5.5-inch Triluminous display (720 x 1280 pixel resolution)
    • 8MP rear camera (Sony Exmor RS, pulse LED flash) + 5MP front camera (wide angle, soft LED flash)
    • Supports 4G LTE, dual-SIM
    • 2500 mAh battery

  • OPPO N1 mini officially announced, coming on 11 June 2014 in China with 4G LTE

OPPO N1 mini officially announced, coming on 11 June 2014 in China with 4G LTE

After a few weeks of leaked images and rumours, we can finally confirm that the OPPO N1 mini is both real and officially announced. Featuring a slightly smaller 5-inch display and only a single LED flash, the smartphone retains the same 13MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and rotateable hinge as the OPPO N1. However, it brings a number of new innovations that the former flagship OPPO N1 did not, and this includes 4G LTE connectivity, Color OS 1.4 and an extra feature that may allow it to capture 24MP images (something like the OPPO Find 7's 50MP image capture). Unfortunately we can't confirm other tech specs and features yet apart from the facts that it weighs 150g and will be available in China on 11 June 2014. No Malaysia release dates or pricing just yet but stay tuned as it is only a matter of time before OPPO makes another reveal, either in Malaysia or at the upcoming Computex Taiwan 2014.

  • Rumours: More OPPO N1 mini images appear in more than white

Rumours: More OPPO N1 mini images appear in more than white

While the original OPPO N1 only came in white, new images of the OPPO N1 mini suggest that the smaller 5-inch display version could come in pastel blue, yellow and pink. So far, the images confirm that the new OPPO N1 mini will retain the same rotateable 13MP camera but will only a single LED flash. Other tech specs and features have yet to be confirmed but rumours indicate that it could have an octa-core processor either from MediaTek or Samsung Exynos and that there will 3G and 4G LTE versions. As usual, take such rumours with some salt but so far, the images look to be real so stay tuned for more developments.

  • Rumours: OPPO N1 mini confirmed by FCC?

Rumours: OPPO N1 mini confirmed by FCC?

We reported earlier on rumours that OPPO was currently working on an OPPO N1 mini smartphone, complete with rotateable hinge, just like the main OPPO N1 smartphone. Apparently, this is almost confirmed as it has appeared at the FCC in the US complete with tech specs and features. True to earlier rumours, the OPPO N1 mini offers a slightly smaller 5-inch display with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution as opposed to the 5.9-inch Full HD 1080p display on the OPPO N1. Other downgrades include a smaller 2140 mAh battery but thankfully, it appears that the OPPO N1 mini will offer the same 13MP camera sensor on a rotateable swing as before. The only difference for the camera is the dual-LED flash which is now just one LED. We can't confirm it yet but it also looks like it won't have the O-touch rear touchpad and the backside looks to be shiny plastic instead of ceramic like before. Other notable tech specs includes 4G LTE support, which was missing in the original OPPO N1. No Malaysia pricing or release dates just yet but stay tuned for more information.
