As the rumour mill continues to churn for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5, we now have some confirmed details of sorts from an inside source. Coming courtesy of Lee Young Hee, Executive VP of Samsung's Mobile Division, the confirmation is about several things including that the Galaxy S5 would be released by April 2014. The company also said that it knew that the design of the Galaxy S4 was too similar with the Galaxy S3 which is why we can also expect a new design for the S5. While they haven't said if this could mean a metal chassis, kevlar backside or just plain polka dots, a different design would make the S5 stand out more. The other notable rumour is that instead of a fingerprint scanner, the Samsung Galaxy S5 could include an iris scanner or eye scanner for bypassing password screens and certifying purchases. This feature we feel wouldn't be all that difficult to implement as you don't really need a dedicated eyeball scanner to do this. Other rumours include a three-sided curved display and more. In any case, April is still a few months off, so do take this rumour with a pinch of salt.

We've seen quite a few Samsung Galaxy S5 concept renders, including one with a curved screen, but there are of course many designers in the world with variously different opinions. One of the latest to surface is a concept render for the Samsung Galaxy S5 that not only features a metal unibody design but looks like a combination of a Samsung Galaxy S4 with a HTC One. This concept render comes courtesy of Hasan Kaymak who has created other concept renders before. In addition to the smartphone render, he has also added on how he'd see TouchWiz 5 looking like, which to us looks like it's borrowing the flat look from iOS 7. While it does look nice, we find it rather unlikely that Samsung would go in that direction, but do enjoy the pictures in the article.

Rumours: Possible Samsung Galaxy S5 or SM-G900F appears on AnTuTu packing 2.5GHz chipset and 3GB RAM
Dec 20, 2013While rumoured to appear in 2014, the Samsung Galaxy S5 seems to be making the rounds as a mystery device going by the model name SM-G900F. Recently spotted on AnTuTu, this device was found to have a 2K display with 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution screen. Other tech specs and features included the 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AC processor and chipset, 3GB od RAM and 32GB storage. Additional tech specs rumoured to come with the smartphone include a 16MP rear camera with Samsung's ISOCELL technology. Many are saying we'll probably see the Samsung Galaxy S5 in February 2014 during the MWC Expo. We're also a bit skeptical that this SM-G900F device really is the Samsung Galaxy S5 as it only manages an AnTuTu score of 29223, whereas other less highly clocked Snapdragon 800 powered smartphones tend to hit the 32000+ mark more often than not so do take this rumour with a big pinch of salt.

Samsung may be considering switching the current AMOLED displays in their smartphones to PLS-LCD displays. The move is supposedly because the price war is getting more cut-throat as lower cost Chinese smartphones are expanding into the market. The PLS-LCD displays offer more or less the same level of quality as AMOLED displays but offer a 20% cut in cost for a smartphone. On top of that, PLS-LCD technology is also owned by Samsung and could offer better yield compared to AMOLED displays. This doesn't mean that Samsung would stop using AMOLED displays completely though as they could be used in the rumoured premium Galaxy F Series of smartphones instead. However, such a move would result in the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 having PLS-LCD displays and not the current AMOLED displays.

And the Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours continue to pile up. This time around it also concerns the Samsung Galaxy Gearsmartwatch which was initially released with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. In line with that, rumour mongers are saying that we may see the next generation Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch announced alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5. While we're not too thrilled about another Bluetooth companion accessory (we're still hoping for a standalone watch phone) rumours indicate that the Gear 2 could be thinner by about 15% to 20% compared to the original Gear. It would be great if the price was dropped and the battery life improved but a thinner smartwatch could also mean a smaller battery. In related news, more Samsung Galaxy S5 tech specs and features were leaked as well with both plastic and metal versions. Asides from the already mentioned rumours of either the Snapdragon 805 or a 64-bit Samsung Exynos Octa powering the S5, rumours are also saying the S5 could come with a 4000 mAh battery. Personally, we're not sure where Samsung would stick such a large battery unless it is a moulded non-removable kind but we're looking forward to next year sometime in January or February 2014 when the Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to make an appearance.

With the rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 said to be coming in 2014, quite a lot of other feature news has cropped up as well. This includes the various patent filings Samsung has done which includes this one for a multi-party video conferencing call which could replace the current ChatOne messaging app. Most video conferencing features like Apple's FaceTime only has 2 people so a multi party video conference call feature would certainly help up the innovative features available on the Samsung Galaxy S5. While there are other multi-party video conference messaging apps like Google Hangouts (which allows up to 10 callers) it requires a good amount of bandwidth from all those involved. Hopefully, Samsung will manage to work on some way of compressing the video stream for this new patent for a truly exceptional feature for the Samsung Galaxy S5.

A metal frame for a smartphone has recently surfaced, and while it isn't an aluminum unibody, it could be the metal frame for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Measurements for the frame come up at 143.8 x 72.3mm which indicates that it could get a 5.3-inch display, matching up with the incremental screen size increase of previous versions. This leak comes courtesy of nowhereelse.fr, which is quite famous for mostly accurate leaked images and tech specs. However, certain aspects of the frame don't match with current features of the Samsung Galaxy S range. These include a corner camera placement as opposed to the standard center camera placement along with a 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom as opposed to standard practice where Samsung smartphones have the 3.5mm audio jack on the top. Then again, this could be a frame for the new premium Samsung Galaxy F line of smartphones. In any case, this is still very much a rumour, so do take it with a pinch of salt. No other tech specs, pricing or Malaysia release dates were available but the Samsung Galaxy S5 is said to come in January 2014.

Quite a few people are looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy S5, including those who can create a reasonable concept render. This concept render of the Samsung Galaxy S5 appeared from the folks at O2 Guru TV sporting a curved screen from top to bottom, much like the LG G Flex. While this looks pretty and all, what is really interesting are the tech specs coming with the concept render. These Samsung Galaxy S5 tech specs include:
- A 64-bit octa-core processor and chipset
- 3GB RAM
- 5-inch Curved Super AMOLED display (2560 x 1440 pixel resolution)
- 16MP rear camera (4K video recording)
- 4000 mAh battery
- Android 4.4 Kit Kat + updated TouchWiz
- 4x front facing speakers

We recently saw some slides showing off Samsung's plans for flexible displays but some more slides have appeared as well that seem to confirm a 2K 560ppi display for the next Samsung Galaxy S5 in 2014. This is clearly shown in the slide number 18 with a Super AMOLED display with 560 ppi available by 2014. Reaching 560ppi on a 5.3-inch screen would mean that it would have resolutions equaling 2600 x 1440, placing it within 2K display range. We're guessing that this would likely be a plastic substrate like the one used in the Samsung Galaxy Round but what really caught our eye was that the flexible screen concept render for the Samsung Galaxy Gear was clearly shown in slides 29 and 30. It could be just a sloppy copy paste job, but it hints that we may see such flexible displays in Samsung smartwatches soon. It also shows that Samsung is thinking ahead of just curved, bended and foldable wearable devices as stretchable displays were also listed as well.

It isn't even the end of the year yet and already many of us are predicting features for the next smartphones and devices that haven't even been announced yet. This includes the Samsung Galaxy S5 which already has many rumours saying that it could have a new 64-bit Exynos processor and 4GB of RAM along with a metal chassis. We've also come up with a list of realistic features which we think would be both achievable and make the S5 a much better smartphone. Check out the list in this article.
