Device manufacturers often reveal new products rather unintentionally, especially when they're trying to promote something else. This seems to have happened recently with the upcoming Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and also a still unnamed Sony Android Wear smartwatch. Neither of them have been announced yet and we still don't know details about tech specs and features, but it appears that both will be water resistant enough to bring to the pool. While there are no exact Malaysia release dates, the upcoming IFA 2014 event could be a great place to introduce them so we expect both to appear in the next few weeks.

They may be just accessories for now, but smartwatches mark the trend for the next step of mobile computing devices in the form of wearable computers. While development on smartwatches have been on for the past couple of years, most of it has involved independent developers like the creators of the Pebble smartwatch which crowdfunded it's development. Quite recently, better known tech companies have taken a crack at it with the Sony SmartWatch 2, the Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Qualcomm Toq. Which one reigns supreme and which one would we buy? While the Sony SmartWatch 2 got announced in June 2013 it was originally scheduled to reach Malaysia in September 2013. Sony Mobile Malaysia recently changed this to October but gave a more definite date range this time around. This time, they say that the Sony SmartWatch 2 will be available in Malaysia from 15 October 2013 to 20 October 2013. While this solves the issue of a Malaysia release date, it doesn't answer the question about pricing, but we should find out about that soon. In addition to this information, Sony Mobile Malaysia also said that the SBH52 Smart Bluetooth Handset would also be coming along with the Sony SmartWatch 2. Released together with the SmartWatch 2 in tandem with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra the Handset is priced at RM480 but will likely be available with the Sony SmartWatch 2 next month.

When it was first announced in June, the Sony SmartWatch 2 was estimated to arrive in September but according to UK retailer Clove, Sony supposedly said it would be released on 15 July 2013, but with the date now passed Clove have come back and received news from Sony that the new release date would 9 September 2013. Sony has brought a number of SmartWatches out for consumers from 2010 to 2012. However, not many have sold (perhaps due to very high prices and limited functionality). However, with a number other competitors looking to make smartwatches of their own, Sony are looking to release a new SmartWatch pretty soon. In tweets released recently, Sony have teased a statistic from BI Intelligence stating that "1/3 smartphone users want smart wrist wear" and an image of the previous Sony SmartWatch while hinting that they may release this new Sony SmartWatch at the Mobile Asia Expo, due from 26 June 2013 to 28 June 2013 in Shanghai. No other teasers or other data were available so stay tuned for further developments.

Sony have already released their wearable computer SmartWatch, but in a move to open up app development for the device, they've since opened up the SmartWatch to other developers. This means the device can now be unlocked and developers can then flash alternative firmware for the device. If you're looking to do some SmartWatch development you can do so at the Open SmartWatch Project site. Sony have made a SmartWatch Hacker Guide available. In tandem with this, Sony are also co-arranging the SmartWatch Arduino Hackathon which combines Arduino firmware with the Sony SmartWatch. We'd love to have a custom working SmartWatch so if you have any ideas, do drop by.
