As announced yesterday, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has been officially launched in Malaysia for an affordable price of RM799 featuring respectable tech-specs such as a 14nm FinFET chip and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, which Xiaomi claims to have improved thermal heat reduction by 20-25%, along with a 5.5-inch Full HD (1080p) display, 13MP rear camera (BSI CMOS, PDFA), and a 4100 mAh battery pack. After rumours about pinecones, Xiaomi officially announced their first Surge S1 SoC (System on Chip) processor. Turns out Pinecone is the research subsidiary that designed and developed the 28nm Surge S1 which is now being used to power the Xiaomi Mi 5C. The Surge S1 is an octa-core ARM Cortex A53 processor (4 x 2.2GHz A53 + 4 x 1.4GHz A53) with a Mali T-860 MP4 graphics processor. According to Xiaomi it has outperformed the Snapdragon 625 and can decode 4K video, support VoLTE via a 32-bit DSP while an integrated 14-bit dual ISP allows it to take pictures in low-light.

In today’s news, a new model number has just passed by TENAA’s site and many thought that it was the Xiaomi Redmi 4X (not the Redmi Note 4X), however, it could actually be another phone with an updated design and improved tech-specs, which could be the Redmi 5 instead.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Xiaomi may soon be following in the footsteps of Huawei and Samsung as they are rumoured to be coming out with their own Pinecone processors for their upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5C or Mi 6 smartphones. Huawei's own Kirin processors are quickly proving themselves to be a match with Samsung's Exynos processors in their new Huawei Mate 9 phone so Xiaomi could reap huge benefits by making their own processors.
