Just weeks ago, we reported that ASUS would pause new smartphone launches for 2026. Although there was no official word from the company, ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih has come forward and confirmed the new direction. ASUS is moving its focus away from expanding its smartphone lineup to concentrate on artificial intelligence–driven innovation.

Smartphone Releases Put on Hold as Resources Reallocated

Responding to media questions about the future of ASUS’s mobile business, Shih confirmed that the company will not be launching new smartphone models in 2026, although after-sales support and service for existing devices will continue. Rather than expanding its presence in the crowded smartphone market, ASUS plans to redirect development resources toward AI-centric hardware and solutions.

“All In on AI” Becomes Central to ASUS’s Vision

Shih portrayed the company’s new focus as more than just a trend, positioning AI as the “ultimate trajectory” for future growth. According to him, this means incorporating AI into everyday life and work through a wide range of products beyond PCs, including physical AI devices. ASUS has already seen strong momentum in its AI server business and views this pivot as a way to harness long-term opportunities amid global shifts in technology demand.

Context: Memory Shortages and Market Challenges

ASUS’s decision aligns with broader industry trends, where rising memory costs and supply constraints have challenged smartphone manufacturing economics and prompted hardware makers to rethink product strategies. The move away from introducing new phones reflects these pressures while signalling a bet that AI-related markets will drive future growth.

A few prominent brands have spoken out about the upcoming challenges for 2026. Namely, Xiaomi, HONOR and Nothing were predicting rising costs for smartphones this year. But what do you think of ASUS' new direction? Let us know, and stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
