Besides unveiling the Apple Watch Series 8 and the Apple Watch SE, Apple today for the first time ever unveiled a new Apple Watch lineup called the Apple Watch Ultra. A rugged and premium with top-of-the-line specs, the smartwatch is designed for exploration and outdoor activities.
In terms of design, it is slightly bulkier than the usual Apple Watch design thanks to a new 49mm titanium case. It also has a new Action button (in orange colour) as well as a redesigned digital crown. All versions of the smartwatch have cellular built-in.
The display sports a whopping 2000 nits peak brightness and is protected by sapphire crystal. The buttons and digital crown are also usable with gloves, apparently something that outdoor athletes have been calling for. Moreover, there’s also a new 86-decibel siren to help others locate you when you’re out and about for an adventure off the grid.
Besides that, the Watch Ultra also has improved multiband GPS with support for a brand new L5 frequency. There’s also a trackback feature, a new Compass app with Compass Waypoints. For triathletes, the Action button can be used to transition from one leg of the triathlon to another. Later this year, there’s even a new auto-detect feature for when athletes arrive at tracks.
Apple claims that the Watch Ultra has up to 36 hours of battery life on a single charge and up to 60 hours when Low Power Mode is turned on. The latter is quite impressive given you can still measure heart rate and GPS when Low Power Mode is engaged on the Watch Ultra.
The features don’t end there either, as the new smartwatch has a WR 100 water resistance for kiteboarding. Sticking to watersports, the Watch Ultra is certified with EN 13319 for scuba divers and you can fully use it while diving up to 40 metres.
Other notable specs include three new bands (Alpine, Trail and Ocean), the same Temperature Sensor and Crash Detection as the Watch Series 8 and advanced health alerts. The Watch Ultra is priced at RM3799 in Malaysia, though availability is yet to be revealed by Apple.
