Comparison: YES 4G LTE vs webe postpaid plans (Round 2)

At the end of June, both YES and webe have announced their newest mobile plans in Malaysia. YES has been around for at least 6 years now, whereas webe is a relatively a new player in this field (formerly known as P1). We have already done a speed comparison between the YES 4G LTE vs webe mobile connection, but what about the features and offers? Well, that's what we're going to do now. Read below to find out which one is suitable for you!

Features - Both have amazing prices, but webe has better features

Since webe doesn't offer any prepaid plans, it's only fair to compare the postpaid plans offered by the two companies. So let's start off with YES first, YES's all-new 4G LTE plans is fairly simple and straight forward, they have 5 plans for both postpaid and prepaid (visit here if you want to know about YES's new prepaid plans) known as the "Double Double" which means the plan offers both 4G LTE and 4G Broadband networks in one go. Prices are reasonably affordable as well considering the plan packs tons of data, check it out below:

Postpaid plans Data Calls/SMS Fee
Postpaid 48 10GB (6 4G LTE + 4GB 4G Broadband) Free on-net calls and SMS RM48
Postpaid 88 24GB (16 4G LTE + 8GB 4G Broadband) Free on-net calls and SMS RM88
Postpaid 98 32GB (6 4G LTE + 24GB 4G Broadband) Free on-net calls and SMS RM98
Postpaid 128 38GB (24 4G LTE + 14GB 4G Broadband) or (8 4G LTE + 38 4G Broadband) Free on-net calls and SMS RM128
Postpaid 158 46GB (32 4G LTE + 14GB 4G Broadband) or (8 4G LTE + 38 4G Broadband) Free on-net calls and SMS RM158

In addition to that, if you sign up for their new YES Double Double bundle (oh hey, it rhymes); you'll get their YES Altitude smartphone for free along with their “HERO” plan which offers up to 24GB of data (16GB 4G LTE + 8GB 4G Broadband) at an affordable RM70 per month. So using this plan comparing with other telcos' plan (you can check out their comparison chart here), YES is actually a much better choice to go for in terms of economical terms.

Moving on, webe's new postpaid plan is pretty attractive too. As of 30 June 2016, webe's postpaid plan seems more flexible and everything is done digitally. We will get to that later, but first, here's how their postpaid plan works.

webe.jpg

  • The starting price is RM199 and it's only open up to invited TM and webe members (for now, the public will get their hands on it soon too)
  • Like YES, it also offers unlimited calls and SMS. Also, no contract required and data usage is unlimited.
  • Ah, if you happen to be a TM or webe member, you get a RM60 off discount. So that's RM139 (RM147.34 with GST).
  • But wait, there's more! If you happen to have a webe certified phone (you may check the list here), that's another RM60 off! That's down to RM79 (RM83.74 with GST).
  • Got any sub-lines? You're in luck again because there's also a discount on that, you're able to have 5 sub-lines max at most and the discount will only start at the 2nd sub-line with RM10 off monthly, followed by RM20 for the 3rd, and RM30 for the 4th and 5th sub-line. So if you have at least 4 sub-lines, that's as low as RM49.

With such amazing promotion price, it's hard not to sign up for it. There are other perks as well too like able to choose your own number (first-come, first-serve basis), you can register this online and your SIM package will be delivered to you in 1-3 working days. Furthermore, although this has nothing to do with their package, but they also have a 24/7 live chat support should you encounter any issues, which is nice.

Performance - YES downloads and uploads faster

As mentioned earlier in the introduction, we have already done a connection speed test comparison between YES and webe. While we have no problems of surfing the net, there is only one clear winner when it comes to download and upload speed, in this case, YES takes the win. Considering their existence since 2010, I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise. However, like the other big four telcos, both of them still have a problem in a dead zone area.

There is also one particular food for thought, though. Since webe offers unlimited data, we can't help to think whether their servers can actually handle the traffic or not; given that a lot of Malaysians are using the internet more now than ever (we know we have no evidence of this, but you know who you are), even if the servers don't crash, we expect it to be really heavy. Of course, this is just our forecast so we can't be sure if webe's speed will actually go down.

On the other hand, YES has the authority to maintain the speed that we tested in the speed comparison, meaning that it might actually not reach the true maximum speed potential to control the traffic but the aforementioned fast speeds should be maintained. Again, just another disclaimer here.

Conclusion - Different plans for different needs, and an exciting future

Overall, we are quite excited for the future that Malaysians are getting a lot of benefits over the "data wars". As both YES and webe are still growing with more base stations added for more coverage, we hope to see amazing speeds one day when we can just connect as we like without having to wait or experience lagging.

If I had to choose, I'd go for the YES postpaid 98 plan because it fits my need more and the idea of having both 4G LTE and 4G Broadband is great, not to mention the download and upload speed has already proven that YES did it better. As for webe, I think webe postpaid plan is a better offer for those who has a family to take advantage of the sub-line discounts, their connection speed may not be as fast as YES but at least it gets the job done with speeds much better than average (at this time before any real loads on the network have been laid).

So what do you think? Have you signed up for either of the postpaid plans yet? Let us know in the comments below on which one you prefer and stay tuned for more comparisons at Technave.com!
