As we previously reported, both Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and MyDigital ID are now sorting out their rollout after a not-so-good rollout last year. The second 5G network has been announced but delayed and the MyDigital ID servers crashed due to an influx of new user registrations.
Initially, Communications Minister Fahmi said the Prime Minister had given the two companies until mid-December to tackle the delays. But it is already mid-January so what is the latest news? Well, Digital of Malaysia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that the companies are still working on it. In fact, the solution proposal is expected to be ready on 12 February, just in time for the National Council of Digital Economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution meeting.
For those who are unaware, MyDigital ID will be a new national digital identification system for Malaysians. It was designed to protect them from online scams, and identity theft and also to make online identity verification easier. As for the dual 5G network delay, it is unknown why there are outstanding agreements between DNB and the local telcos.
According to our Prime Minister, MyDigital ID is actually behind schedule by a year. If you recall, MyDigital ID was initially supposed to be compulsory to log into the MyJPJ app on 10 October 2024. After a disaster of handling new registrations by the users, Transport Minister Anthony Loke decided to call it off for now. MyDigital ID apologized for the messy situation but also said it's not entirely its fault.
Meanwhile, Gobind also commented that the Malaysian government is working closely with SMEs to adopt digitisation to improve their business. However, it seems that a number of them are reluctant to change. With this, the Ministry's related agencies have been assigned to find out the reasons.
