In recent months, AI has been one of the biggest tech topics on everyone's mind. Many companies are looking into different ideas like generative AI, and some have tried implementing these ideas in mobile devices. In fact, ChatGPT was released recently on iOS and Android.

Qualcomm has been developing AI tech for more than a decade. With the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, they provide AI capabilities to flagship mobile devices. But how does the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 help with AI? Here are some of the AI-powered features I've found.

Device personalisation

The thing about having AI on a mobile device is that it can learn from my usage habits. That allows the system to gradually change different aspects of the phone, like optimising the battery, suggesting apps, and more. This results in a customised user experience that best suits me and my needs.

Power management

Speaking of battery, the optimisation provides a noticeable increase in battery life. As mentioned, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset uses AI to analyse my daily usage. In the process, it detects apps that I rarely use or tend to leave idle. After that, it reallocates the power to optimise or reduce power consumption so it saves battery life without decreasing performance.

Another aspect that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 helps in is mobile photography. Specifically, the Cognitive ISP in the chipset is responsible for that. It can capture from three cameras simultaneously, allowing the device to capture 4096 times more colour and light data. As a result, I get more vibrant photos with a higher dynamic range, or in short photos that have better skin tones and more punchy colours.

In addition, it can enhance aspects like skin tone, eye tone, or hair colour in real-time; perfect for when I'm taking selfies or portrait shots. Other photography features include 300% faster autofocus, enhanced night shooting, always-sensing camera, and more.

Real-time ray tracing

Lastly, AI can be of great help in the gaming department. That's awesome because I play quite a few mobile games regularly. Specifically, it's instrumental in delivering high-end features like real-time ray tracing. This feature gives mobile games more photorealistic visuals, natural light elements, and accurate reflections. Overall, I can expect games to look much better when powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

And there you go, features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that improve your user experience. Many of its new features are thanks to the AI engine, and I'm sure we'll see more AI features as the tech improves. Perhaps the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would provide some more exciting upgrades? We'll find out when it launches later this year.

For a summary of features and the specs for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, visit the Qualcomm website. If you are interested, there are powerful flagships on the market already sporting this chipset. In particular, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series smartphones sports a customised version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, with higher clock speeds for improved performance. The results are smartphones that combine powerful hardware with unrivaled performance and enhanced AI capabilities.
