Facebook hasn't given up on placing ads in WhatsApp

Last year, Facebook announced its plans to put ads in WhatsApp sometime in 2020. It was thought that the plan was dropped earlier this year when the company disbanded the team working on the project, but it seems like that may not be the case. A recent report indicated that Facebook is still looking to implement ads into WhatsApp in the future.

According to XDA Developers (via TheInformation), Facebook is not in a hurry to implement ads in WhatsApp but the plan was always on the cards. The service has as many as 1.6 billion users as of 2019, so that's a lot of people that could be reached with targeted ads. Considering that Facebook bought WhatsApp for USD 16 billion back in 2014, the company would at least want to recoup its cost.

Facebook planned to include ads in status and this is supposedly a "long-term opportunity for WhatsApp". Thus far, plans have not gone through because the company was worried about regulatory bodies getting on their case, as well as the backlash that could come from users. However, once Facebook has unified all its messaging platforms, the plans for ads will likely proceed.

While it seems that we won't have to be concerned about WhatsApp ads in the short term. The reports indicate that it's eventually going to happen.
