Late last year, PDRM looked into banning e-scooters from the roads in Malaysia. While it's not a full ban of e-scooters, the authorities confirmed that you can only use them in gazetted areas. Of course, some stubborn users refuse to comply, and the government is ready to start taking legal action.
According to Harian Metro, the Jabatan Siasatan dan Penguatkuasaan Trafik (JSPT) will start to monitor and take action against those who use electric scooters outside of gazetted areas. These areas include playgrounds, pedestrian areas, and select locations in shopping malls. As announced earlier this year, you can't ride them on regular roads since it's dangerous and could cause accidents.
The JSPT director for Bukit Aman, Datuk Mat Kasim Karim, said an RM300 fine would be imposed on those who are found guilty for the first time. If caught a second time, the offender will receive an RM1000 fine or face 3 months of jail time. We're unsure if this is the maximum fine that would be imposed, but the government will probably make adjustments if e-scooter users continue to ignore the road ban.
Have you seen these e-scooter users riding on regular roads? What are your thoughts on the topic? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
