Global sales of premium-priced phones reached its highest ever level in 2021 thanks to Apple

The global premium smartphone market sales reached its highest ever level in 2021 with an impressive 24% year-on-year (YoY) increase. This is according to a report by Counterpoint Research, a global industry analysis firm based in Asia.

The study, conducted by Counterpoint Research’s Market Pulse Service found that premium-priced smartphones with a wholesale average selling price (ASP) of more than ~RM1700 outpaced the 7% YoY growth of overall global smartphone sales last year. In fact, premium smartphones amounted to 27% of 2021’s global smartphone sales.

In terms of OEMs, Apple continue to dominate the premium smartphones market, gaining 5% increase from 2020 to 60% of overall sales last year. This may also be contributed to the delayed launch of Apple devices in 2020 which meant that consumers bought the device in 2021 instead.

Apple premium smartphones also saw unprecedented growth in the Chinese market, reaching its highest ever market share in 2021’s fourth quarter. More impressively, Apple was also the top OEM for premium smartphones in all regions in the world last year.

Samsung came in second place last year and saw a 3% share decrease in the premium market space for a total of 17% market share. Meanwhile, Huawei came in third with 6% market share, Xiaomi fourth with 5%Oppo fifth with 4% and vivo sixth with 3%.
